"Chefs of the Month" Debbie Gold and Michael Smith

Gold and Smith, former Executive Chefs at The American Restaurant, have distinguished themselves time and again over the past eight years in Kansas City, earning the James Beard Award for Best Midwestern Chefs in 1999. The award was one of many accolades earned by the team-including two previous nominations, being named one of Esquire Magazine's Chefs to Watch in 1997, and earning continuous 4-star Mobil and AAA 4-diamond ratings-that have made Smith and Gold household names in the American culinary community. Cynthia's Corner: Canning and Preserving the Harvest

I can remember my mother working in the kitchen with her mother, and at other times, with my Dad's mom, canning and putting things up for winter. I remember my Grandmother Bacon's fruit cellar, actually dug far back under the ground instead of being part of the cellar under the house.

The first memory I have of the cellar, was one time when Grandma and I had gone down to get some things for dinner. I have no idea how small I was, but I do know I did not like the dark. Grandma reached up and turned on a light bulb, and a glorious rainbow, all caught and held captive in jars, filled the shelves in front of me.

Today's Recipe from Crisco.com

Creole Barbecue Shrimp

By Crisco Chef Jimmy Gherardi
Makes 4 servings

Ingredients:

2 tbsp. Crisco Pure Canola Oil
1/2 cup chopped onion
3-4 cloves chopped garlic
3/4 cup ketchup
2 tablespoons brown sugar
2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
1 tablespoon Creole seasoning
24 Jumbo shrimp, peeled and deveined, tails left on
1 lemon, cut into wedges

In a medium saucepan, heat the Crisco Pure Canola Oil over medium heat. Add the onion and garlic. Cook about 2 minutes. Add the ketchup, brown sugar, worcestershire sauce, and Creole seasoning. Stir well and bring to a simmer.

Cook for about 5 minutes and allow to cool. Place the shrimp in a large nonreactive bowl and pour about 1/2 of the cooled sauce over the shrimp. Toss to coat the shrimp evenly. Refrigerate 1 to 2 hours.
Heat the grill. Grill the shrimp until done. Place on a platter and pour the remaining heated sauce over the shrimp. Garnish with lemon wedges. Enjoy!
