5. On "Doing Research" A writer’s thoughts!
-----------------------------------------

I was out last week on vacation. I didn't go anywhere. It was one of those times when I planned on puttering around the house, getting stuff done that I can't get to during a 40-hour workweek. There was chipped paint to be sanded, a last coat of varnish that needed applying, a chandelier clouded with dust and drawers that begged to be organized. I'm back at work now, and none of these chores got done. But I'm not too torn up about it, because I spent the time with my kids.

This summer you may be finding it harder to concentrate on your writing if you have kids home from school or if there's a perfect sunny day beckoning to you to come out and play. While it's important to be disciplined about sticking to a writing schedule, getting query letters out and meeting those deadlines, I hope you will take time to go outside and play, to let down a little and rejuvenate your spirits. Especially where writers are concerned, there's no such thing as wasted time, because you never know when any given moment is going to bring inspiration or illustrate a truth in a way you'd never thought of before. So, go for a swim or take the kids to the park. If anyone questions you, tell them you're doing research.

6. Cynthia’s Corner, Spotlight on Pittsburgh
   http://chef2chef.net/features/cynthia/
-----------------------------------------

Pittsburgh has made many great culinary contributions to the world. We are the birthplace of Clark Candy bars, Eskimo pies, Klondike ice cream bars, Pecan Ice Cream balls, chipped chopped ham, Crabmeat Hoezel, Devonshire sandwiches, and the Heinz company, which makes more than 57 products these days. We just might be the world center for fried zucchini and fried ice cream. We have many world- and country-wide award winning chefs who call Pittsburgh home…

8. Recipe: SALMON STEAKS WITH CUCUMBER SAUCE
   from Crisco.com http://crisco.com
-----------------------------------------

SALMON STEAKS WITH CUCUMBER SAUCE

4 servings

4 salmon steaks, 1 inch thick
2 tablespoons CRISCO Oil
3/4 cup peeled, seeded and chopped cucumber
1/4 cup finely-chopped celery
2 tablespoons chopped green onion
2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon instant chicken bouillon granules
1/8 teaspoon pepper
1 cup half-and-half
1 egg yolk, slightly beaten

Set oven to broil and/or 550°F. Place salmon steaks on broiler pan. Broil 3 to 4 inches from heat, 10 to 15 minutes, or until fish flakes easily with fork, turning over once.

Meanwhile, heat Crisco Oil in small saucepan. Add cucumber and celery. Sauté over moderate heat until tender-crisp. Add onion. Sauté 30 seconds longer. Stir in flour, bouillon granules and pepper. Blend in half-and-half. Cook, stirring constantly, 5 to 7 minutes, or until thickened and bubbly. Blend small amount of hot mixture into egg yolk. Add back to hot mixture. Cook, stirring constantly, 1 minute. Serve with salmon.
