NEW BOOK SERVES UP CULINARY FAUX PAS,
FIASCOS & FETES
HENDERSONVILLE, N.C.—Hendersonville’s gourmet emporium Purple Sage welcomes local author Terry Ruscin on Friday, April 22 to launch his new book Dining & Whining—a must read for restaurateurs, chefs, managers, hosts/hostesses, servers and bussers. The author will be available from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. to answer questions and sign copies of his books. The event includes a cooking demonstration with samples. The public is invited at no charge.
Ruscin, a food maven, scrutinized restaurants from San Diego to Hendersonville and many between—finding a dearth of excellence. In Dining & Whining, he weights grievances against the rare ideal and ultimately consults Boston’s "Table Doctor" (Brent Michael Kaufman)— seeking a cure for America’s dining dilemma. An epilogue shares the diagnosis, together with a handy restaurant evaluation form.
The chapters of Dining & Whining segue through breakfast, alfresco forays and afternoon tea to apéritif, hors d’oeuvres, airline cuisine, entrées, wine, dessert, tipology and more. The writing is replete with food and beverage histories, exposés on luscious cuisine and stellar service from starry restaurants, medical reports and a dichotomous study on American fast food versus the European event of dining. Included is a guide on tipping.
Poorly trained, ill-mannered waitstaff vex the author, and he addresses these gaffes in Dining & Whining. From commenting on foreign matter found in food to expressions such as "Still workin’ on that?" and a server addressing women as "you guys," Ruscin supplies a banquet of humorous commiseration in this handbook for fellow gastro-snobs.
Earlier books by Terry Ruscin include Los Duendes: A Nostalgic Journey through Spain, Taste for Travel (a travelogue of food styles and landscapes of Great Britain, France and Italy) and Mission Memoirs (a stunning coffee-table book on the first Christian establishments in California). Copies of all Ruscin’s books will be available at Purple Sage. Ruscin’s work has earned the coveted Benjamin Franklin award, traveled with Rounce & Coffin Club’s Western Books Exhibition, and voted "Art Book of the Year" by San Diego Magazine.
Terry Ruscin is a guest columnist for the Hendersonville Times-News, Mountain Traditions and Bold Life magazines and editor of ¡Siempre Adelante!, an international newsletter.
