High School Sophomores and Juniors Invited to Compete in
National Culinary Challenge at Johnson & Wales University
Junior Division Features Gingerbread Houses
MIAMI — August 23, 2005 — The National Culinary Challenge at Johnson & Wales University is on! In the junior division, the theme is gingerbread: High-school sophomores and juniors from the U.S. may enter their recipe, design plans and photo of an original 16-inch by 16-inch by 16-inch gingerbread house — and be in the running for scholarships. Students may access application materials at www.jwu.edu/culinary; write to National High School Culinary Challenge (Junior Division), University Events, Johnson & Wales University, 1701 NE 127th Street, North Miami, FL 33181; or call 1-866-JWU-FLORIDA. Entries must be postmarked by October 5, 2005.
Ten finalists will travel to the J&W Florida Campus to recreate their houses for a panel of judges on November 13. Judges will include Adrianne Calvo, a past finalist who recently graduated from Johnson & Wales and already has published her own cookbook, “Maximum Flavor” (Random House, 2005). In addition, Deni Cole, an award-winning gingerbread house creator whose houses have been featured on “Good Morning America” and “Southern Living,” will serve as a judge.
The following prizes will be awarded: Grand prize winner — $5,000 scholarship renewable for up to four years; First runner-up — $4,000 scholarship renewable for up to four years; Second runner-up — $3,000 scholarship renewable for up to four years; All other finalists — $1,000 scholarship renewable for up to four years.
To ensure a firm structure, Johnson & Wales will provide the dough during the competition. Finalists must bring specialty tools and all other decorative ingredients. Johnson & Wales will provide finalists who live outside of a 500 mile radius with airfare; all finalists will receive hotel accommodations.
After the competition, the 10 houses will be on display as part of the holiday marketplace at Village of Merrick Park in Coral Gables, Fla. The 10 finalists will also receive General Growth Properties gift cards, valid at Village of Merrick Park and its 209 sister shopping centers across the country.
The National High School Culinary Challenge offers high school students the opportunity to win scholarships to Johnson & Wales University through contests that call for creativity and culinary flair. The junior division features a gingerbread house contest, while the senior division involves an original recipe contest —students may enter either the dinner or dessert category under the themes Family Heritage, Healthful and Taste of the States.
