Women Chefs Learn the Art of Self-Promotion

by Rebecca Penovich

DC Women Chefs & Restaurateurs Serve Up PR Workshop

WASHINGTON, DC—If media opportunity knocks, will you be ready? Or will you be too busy running your restaurant or food business—taking in orders, checking the produce, creating food, managing your staff, washing the dishes—to answer the call?

Restaurant chefs, cooking school teachers, food consultants, and personal chefs are often charged with publicizing their business in addition to running it and creating the food. Women entrepreneurs find self-promotion difficult and time-consuming. Says one area chef, “I’d rather concentrate on the food.”

It’s no wonder that male celebrity chefs outnumber female celebrity chefs on television by some estimates, 2 to 1. The DC area chapter of Women Chefs & Restaurateurs, a national association dedicated to promoting the education and advancement of women in the restaurant industry, hopes to influence that ratio.

The chapter offers members expert advice and training with “Feeding The Media: Publicity Tips From The Pros,” a seminar with some of the top experts in restaurant and food industry pr and marketing. The seminar is slated for Monday, September 29, from 4:00-7:00 pm at the Fairfax County Public Access station, Channel 10, 2929 Eskridge Road, Fairfax, VA.

Joan Hisaoka, President, Hisaoka Public Relations; Karen Cathey, President, Bon Vivant Food Marketing; Natalie Webb, M.S., R.D., L.D., President, Nutrition Network, and SandyTrupp, Managing Director and media trainer, Planned Television Arts, a division of Ruder Finn will talk about how to launch a business with publicity, how to land a morning segment on television and
do the interview well, and how to find time in the day to make your pr work for you. Rebecca Penovich of Art of the Table will moderate.

Attendees (the first five to sign up) will receive hands-on training in front of the camera on an actual set with a kitchen with an expert media trainer to tape the presentation and provide feedback.

The event is open to food entrepreneurs, chefs, guests, culinary students, and WCR members. Price is $30, WCR members; $40 non-members; and $25 for culinary students. To register, call toll-free 1-877-927-7787 or register online at www.womenchefs.org.

The mission of Women Chefs & Restaurateurs (WCR) is to promote the education and advancement of women in the restaurant industry and the betterment of the industry as a whole. Formed in 1993 by eight of the nation's top women chefs and restaurateurs, WCR has grown to over 2,000 members, offering a variety of networking, professional and support services.
