Make a Difference

by Diane Reeder

Each moment of every day we are afforded an opportunity.

Every second we have a chance to change our lives, fulfill our destiny or touch someone else's life for the better. Every minute we have an opportunity to choose to be an active part of a solution or choose to ignore a problem. At the end of a year each of us will have had 525,600 possibilities when we could have made a choice to seize an opportunity or to allow it to slip from our grasp.

The Queens Galley, a NY based not for profit is asking you as a food service professional to consider seizing this opportunity to make a difference in your own backyard. There are many ways that you can help that won't involve dragging out your credit card or check book. The donation you can give is far more coveted…your time. The Queens Galley is reminding you that volunteers are needed all over the country at various charities to assist with local programs. As a volunteer chef you have within your capacity to teach people to help themselves. You can teach skills and techniques to stretch a food dollar better to families who might otherwise go hungry. You can show senior citizens at risk that a diagnosis of diabetes does not mandate a life sentence of prohibition of food that tastes good. You can inform patients recovering from a heart attack that not all fats are created equal, and through hands on example you can show children that it is indeed ok (and encouraged!) to sometimes play with food. The ways you can offer assistance are as vastly different as those in need who request it. The frequency of those appeals is ever increasing. In 2004 The Queens Galley saw an increase in demand for hands on food budgeting and skills workshops by over 200%. This is not a NY based phenomenon, no matter where you are in the Unites States there is a place that you as a foodservice professional can do some good for others in your community. No matter if your specialty is an area of cuisine, skill or nutrition agencies will welcome the support.

Please take this opportunity to heart and consider the impact that you can make for your own community. The Queens Galley is making a difference and we ask that you join us in this campaign to continue making a difference one meal at a time.
