By Cynthia Bowan

1/2 c. butter (no substitutions)
2 c. sugar
1 1/2 c. sweetened condensed milk
2 egg yolks, well beaten
1 tsp. vanilla
4 oz. bittersweet chocolate, melted
2 c. sifted cake flour
2 tsp. baking powder
2 egg whites, well beaten

Preheat oven to 350F. Grease and flour two 9" cake pans. Cream butter and sugar; add melted chocolate. Fold into the egg yolks and vanilla. Sift flour and baking powder; sift twice more. Combine two mixtures, alternating with milk. Fold in beaten egg whites. Pour batter into prepared pans and bake for 30-35 minutes, or until cake tests done. Remove from oven and cool before icing.

Note: if you use unsalted butter, add 1/4 tsp. salt. Do not add salt with regular butter.
